'Shandar. Zabardast. Zindabaad.' Meaning

Shaandaar (also Shandaar or Shandar) is made with the root Shaan and the suffix -daar. Shaan means dignity or magnificence. -daar means 'with'. Thus, Shaandaar means something magnificent.

Zabardast is a commonly used word in Urdu and Hindi, and is used for strong and loud things, mostly in positive sense. Zabardast would mean something powerful, though not vice-versa is necessary. Also, zabardasti which comes from the same root is often used for a negative meaning, conveying coercion.

Zindabaad is a word that is more or less same as the phrase 'Live Long.' It's comes from the root Zinda, that means alive.

So, Shandaar, Zabardast, Zindabaad is a cry that talks about something that is grand, magnificent, powerful, and remains so for a long time to be.

And that's what KaTTi and BaTTi mean in the language of Indian kids, at least to those in Hindi speaking areas. I believe the concept is used by kids almost everywhere across India, even though the nomenclature may be different.

KaTTi comes from the Hindi word Kaatna (to cut), and is used by kids to what you could call cut connection with their friends. BaTTi is end of 'KaTTi.' In the North, KaTTi was expressed with a click of thumb under one's chin, and BaTTi was known as abba.

This is a satirical number that talks about the system with a lot of metaphors. There are puns and idiomatic usages as well. The 'patli gali' here is the police and judiciary, where once caught, one doesn't seem to find a way out, and that's probably the reason it's called patli gali — narrow street — here. If you see the song in the movie, you'll probably be able to make a lot more sense than if you listen to it stand alone. But do listen to it anyway, so that you know the words well when you see the film. A gem from the old trio of Gulzar, VB and Sukhiji.
